ORNL's Sustainability Research and Development

As a U.S. Department of Energy multi-program science and technology laboratory, ORNL is leading the way in sustainability research and development (R&D) in several key areas. Our unique facilities for energy-related R&D are used both for fundamental investigations in the basic energy sciences and for technology development based on that work. Our cross-directorate partnerships leverage scientific discoveries to address functional infrastructure needs.

Scientists at ORNL conduct basic and applied research to create scientific knowledge and technological solutions that promote sustainability by (1) increasing the availability of clean, abundant energy; (2) improving the energy-efficiency of buildings and transportation; (3) developing environmentally friendly sources of renewable energy; (4) researching advanced energy-efficient materials; (5) protecting and restoring the environment; and (6) addressing social, economic, and policy issues related to sustainability. Below you’ll find examples of some of the many exciting areas in these categories in which ORNL is conducting sustainability research. The categories overlap, so you’ll find, for example, information about biofuels under both "Clean, Abundant Energy" and "Renewable Energy."
