Announcements: Thermoelectric powders to convert waste heat to electricity

Title

Thermoelectric powders to convert waste heat to electricity

Body

ORNL has provided a grant to a Lamar University professor, who is developing unique thermoelectric oxide powders to convert waste heat from automobiles and industries to electric power. The energy efficiency of internal combustion (gasoline and diesel) powered vehicles is poor, with only abount 27 percent of the energy contained in a gallon of fuel actually goes toward moving the vehicle. It is estimated that 33 percent of the energy is lost as heat in the cooling system, another 36 percent is lost as heat through the exhaust system, and 4 percent is lost through friction. Finding ways to recapture the energy lost as heat in the cooling system, exhause system, and through friction.
