DOE has awarded approximately $40 million to two teams led by Westinghouse Electric Co. and General Atomics for conceptual design and planning work for the Next Generation Nuclear Plant (NGNP). If the work is successful, the design will be be tested in a demonstration project. The NGNP will produce electricity and process heat (replacing some created by combustion). The design must combine low technical and safety risk with highly reliable operations.
